Before joining Carnegie in 2015, Samorukov worked for the independent news website for five years. He started as a correspondent and then became an editor and international columnist, covering topics including Russian foreign policy, Eastern Europe and its relations with Russia, Balkans, the European economic crisis, Latin America, and the challenges of transitioning to democracy.

Samorukov worked as an analyst at Russian Polis magazine, covering the development of the insurance markets in Central and Eastern Europe from 2008–2009. Prior to that, he was a broker at National Trade Bank.
